About KASS Aviation LLC

KASS Aviation LLC is a premier aircraft painting company built on craftsmanship, precision, and decades of hands-on experience. Founded in 2008 by owner and operator Keith A. Smith, the company began with humble beginnings and a clear vision: deliver high-quality aircraft finishes with integrity, attention to detail, and unmatched professionalism. With over 30 years of experience in aircraft painting, Keith A. Smith has dedicated his career to mastering the art and science of aviation coatings. His deep understanding of surface preparation, corrosion control, paint systems, and FAA-compliant processes has earned KASS Aviation a reputation for excellence in the industry. What started as a small operation has grown into a trusted name serving aircraft owners, operators, and aviation businesses who demand superior results. At KASS Aviation, every project—whether a single-engine aircraft or a large turbine platform—is approached with the same commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. Our team takes pride in transforming aircraft with durable, high-performance paint finishes that not only enhance appearance but also protect and preserve the integrity of the aircraft. From detailed prep work and precision masking to final inspection and finishing, we ensure every step meets the highest standards. Challenge

Keith’s journey into aviation started far from the hangars he operates today. Growing up in Detroit, his entrepreneurial spirit emerged early—selling newspapers and learning the value of hard work. After moving to Selma, he worked at the local hospital until he heard about opportunities at Raytheon. Determined to break into the industry, he applied repeatedly until he landed an entry-level job washing airplanes. That persistence paid off: Keith was invited to join the company’s paint department, where a mentor spent more than a year training him in every step of the aircraft painting process.
With a strong desire to build something of his own, Keith attended a Chamber of Commerce program on business planning and officially formed KASS Aviation in 2008. But like many entrepreneurs, the early years were quiet. It wasn’t until 2011 that he secured his first job painting a static display aircraft—an opportunity that sparked momentum. From there, additional static display projects followed, eventually giving him the confidence to lease his first hangar at the Selma airport. As the business grew, Keith faced the common challenges of new business owners: securing contracts, learning financial management, and navigating government programs like HUBZone.

Solution

Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, Keith repeatedly turned to the Alabama Small Business Development Center for guidance. His first SBDC connection came in 2001 at a workshop at The University of Alabama titled Financing Your Small Business: What Are Your Options. A decade later, he returned to the SBDC to develop his business plan and better understand HUBZone certification requirements.
Most recently, Keith worked closely with SBDC Business Advisors, focusing on growth planning, financial management, and strategic expansion. The Alabama SBDC helped him refine his vision, strengthen financial knowledge, and prioritize steps to scale his operations responsibly. Learning how to understand and monitor his financial metrics proved especially valuable as he prepared for larger projects and workforce expansion.

Results

Today, KASS Aviation continues to grow steadily, employing Keith and two additional team members. The company is known for its relationship-driven approach, investment in employee training, and commitment to delivering a superior customer experience. That philosophy has paid off, especially with long-term clients such as ATP Flight School, where trust and consistency are key.
With demand rising, KASS Aviation is preparing for its next phase of expansion. Keith is in the process of leasing his third hangar at the Selma Regional Airport and forecasting a 50% increase in business by 2026. The company is broadening its service offerings to include aircraft interior work and enhanced mechanical services—positioning itself as a true one-stop shop for aircraft appearance and maintenance.
Keith is also launching an aircraft painting training school, a venture designed to support DIY hobbyists, onboard new employees, share best practices with other facilities (including military partners), emphasize safety, and generate a new revenue stream. The school will offer both online learning and on-site opportunities, further establishing KASS Aviation as a leader in the field.

Testimonial

"You guys have been a guiding beacon for me,” Keith shared. “You give me ideas and directions to focus on and help me learn how to grow. Learning business financial management has been key because you have to know your numbers to know where you are going."

Conclusion

From humble beginnings to a thriving aviation services business, KASS Aviation is a powerful example of what determination, skill, and the right support can achieve. With guidance from the Alabama SBDC and a commitment to excellence, Keith A. Smith continues to elevate his company—and create new opportunities for his employees, clients, and community. The future is bright as KASS Aviation reaches new heights, one expertly crafted aircraft at a time.
